This recipe comes from one of our favorite cafes in our hometown, “Ida Mae’s Cafe” in Amery, Wisconsin.
At Ida Mae’s Cafe, they serve you the best down-home cooking in a welcoming, warm, and cozy atmosphere, where you can come in and feel right at home.
They use locally grown produce from gardens and the farmers’ markets, as well as farm-fresh sheep cheese from just down the road.

Ingredients
For Caramel Sauce:
- ¾ c. - honey
- 2 Tbsp. - water
- 2 Tbsp. - butter
For Bread:
- 3 cups - flour
- 3 Tbsp - honey
- 2½ tsp - baking powder
- ½ tsp - salt
- ⅓ c. - chopped walnuts
- ½ tsp - cinnamon (I used a full tsp.)
- 1 large - granny smith apple chopped (about 1½ c.)
- 12 oz. - beer
- 4 Tbsp - butter
Instructions
Carmel Sauce:
- In pot over high heat, add honey, water & butter.
- Stir until butter is melted.
- Allow to boil without stirring for 5-6 min or until it has turned an amber color.
Bread:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- In a large bowl stir together flour, baking powder, salt, walnuts, cinnamon & apple pieces.
- Pour the beer, honey and butter into dry ingredients, stir until just combined.
- Pour into a greased 1.5 qt. loaf pan.
- Pour caramel sauce over top of loaf.
- Bake 350 for 45-55 min or til toothpick comes out clean.
- Makes 1 loaf.
